Nursing Home vs. Old Age Home

Senior living arrangements come in different forms, and there is no single solution for every elderly person. People often confuse old age homes with nursing homes due to their characteristic similarities. However, there are stark differences through which you can tell them apart. This article will walk you through that so you can figure out which of the two is best suited for your loved one.

What Makes The Difference?

Old age homes aim to provide elderly people freedom, leisure activities, socialization opportunities, and adequate healthcare facilities within their premises. Nursing homes, on the contrary, are for senior citizens suffering from illness or the elderly who need constant care.

It is difficult to compare old age homes and nursing homes, as each of them has its own features and benefits that can overlap due to their similarities. You can understand the differences much better if you evaluate how they function separately.

Old age homes, also known as assisted living or retirement homes, are independent facilities specifically designed for the elderly. These homes aim to allow retirees to lead peaceful lives without putting their health at risk by providing care and rehabilitation services on demand.

Senior citizens who live in old folks’ homes live independently while undergoing medication, counseling, or recovery. At Noble Care, we also have retirement resorts where the retirees can feel at home.

When to pick an old age home

An old age home can be a good choice for a senior citizen who:

  • Needs minor nursing support or medication but doesn’t need full-time medical treatment
  • Needs assistance with everyday tasks such as dressing and bathing
  • Is looking for a decent lifestyle without lawn care or home repairs
  • Wants to live an active life but lacks transportation facilities
  • Is interested in social activities or looking for new friends
  • Wants to engage in fun activities that cater to their interests, such as golf, painting, or religious studies, in a homely environment.

Elderly people with severe health issues, be it physical or mental, are generally admitted to nursing homes. Some suffer from dementia, a mental illness that affects intelligence, character, and memory. At nursing homes, highly trained nurses assist residents with bathing, dressing, walking, and other daily activities.

Despite the fact that nursing homes welcome end-of-life treatment, they aim to keep the patients entertained. Nursing homes provide leisure opportunities for their patients keeping in mind their health concerns.

When to pick a nursing home

A nursing home may be appropriate for elderly loved ones who:

  • Need round-the-clock care due to chronic illness or deteriorating health
  • Aren’t able to feed themselves on their own
  • Have been injured and require extensive rehabilitation
  • Require services such as healthy meals and on-site facilities such as salons, religious services, and medical appointments, which are not available in a home-care environment.
  • Desire more daily engagement and contact than in-home nursing would provide
  • Suffer from progressive disorders, including but not limited to Parkinson’s disease, Dementia, and Multiple Sclerosis.

Explaining The Difference Between Old Age Homes and Nursing Homes

There are some fundamental differences between old age homes and nursing homes, such as:

  1. Old age homes are staffed 24 hours a day, and a part of the staff consists of qualified nurses taking care of the elderly, if and when needed.

On the flip side, nursing homes would provide the same kind of assistance with an additional benefit. They have registered nurses on standby round the clock. Residents living in nursing homes often need constant care from doctors and nurses.

  1. Staff members at an old age home assist people with personal care needs such as washing, dressing, going to the bathroom, and engaging in social or physical activities.

Nurses at nursing homes take constant care of the elderly. So, they provide personal care support as well. But as the residents here generally suffer from sickness, they often stay in bed all the time.

  1. When required, old age homes call in the local nurses to prescribe medications and treat any complicated wounds.

At nursing homes, you’ll always find qualified nurses who can recognize any change in a person’s health and provide medical services accordingly. As such, a nursing home is often the best place for someone with a complicated medical condition.

  1. As many retirees often choose old age homes, they make conventional beds and sleeping arrangements. Most old age homes struggle with residents with mobility issues.

Unlike old age homes, a nursing home has special beds and a range of arrangements for anyone with a mobility issue. At many nursing homes, patients can visit specialized doctors.

Which One To Choose?

Both old folks’ homes and nursing homes offer special care in their own ways. Unless a person has specific medical conditions that necessitate the presence of a licensed nurse around the clock, there is no direct line between the two.

Other services such as Respite Cares offer temporary services varying from days to weeks and even months. Another type of service is Home Nursing, where they provide in-home services via professional nurses. Home nursing offers a variety of assistance to the elderly at home to help them live a healthy life.

When researching care choices, it is important to understand what the individual’s future needs might be. If you’re uncertain, speak to your doctor or assisted living specialists regarding your beloved one’s needs, and they will help you make the best decision.

As your loved ones – especially your parents – age, the roles slowly reverse. They will need you to take care of them. Acting as the primary caretaker while also keeping your life and your family’s stability could be a hard task to do. On the other hand, putting your parents in a nursing home will give you mixed feelings of guilt and sadness.

However, this is a great way to ensure that they get the best quality of care and service that they deserve. This will also help you balance family, work, and a little bit of alone time.

Also, in this way, they will get to meet and know other people that they can talk to and relate to while never losing touch with you and your family.

Health Care Needs

Keep in mind that as people age, their needs also progress. A simple manageable situation can escalate into something more serious over a little period of time. When unsupervised, conditions such as dementia and restricted mobility can pose health risks to an elderly person.

If you are thinking of acting as the primary caregiver, think of the following tasks that come with the role:

  • Tracking doctor’s appointments
  • Managing and maintaining medication
  • Moving/lifting a parent
  • Coping with changes in behavior

It would be hard to do these and keep up with your life, family, and job. Nursing homes offer round-the-clock care and supervision to make sure your loved ones are getting the best care.

Financial Considerations

Aside from long-term insurance, which is not always enough to cover the expenses, you also have to consider home upgrades that will suit your loved one’s needs along with your mortgage. This is not to mention the taxes that will surely increase when your upgrades have been put into calculation. According to, the maximum effect after intravenous injection is noted in 10 minutes, whereas with a shot in the muscle it’s observed within an hour. But when taking pills, the period takes from 90 to 120 minutes. To achieve a euphoric state, addicts use Ativan as an independent drug, or in combination with other means. The most common combinations are Ativan and tranquilizers, Ativan and alcohol.

Personal Obligations

As we keep pointing out in the earlier parts, you have to balance your job, your family, and your own needs too. This can be hard to do when you have to care for someone 24/7 or even just half of the day/week. You might end up not doing anything productive or of quality for everything and everyone.

Your Own Limitations

Let’s be honest, nothing is really sure in this life. We don’t just mean major unfortunate events. What if you have other emergencies to attend to? A friend in great need is an example. What if fever, flu, or even colds hit you?

There are a lot of things to consider when you are deciding whether to put your loved ones into a nursing home or not. But finding the best suited home is the best for everyone in some situations.

Not all facilities participate in health care and Medicaid, thus if one amongst these programs covers you or the person you’re serving to, it’s necessary to verify that the ability you’ve got in mind is certified to receive that variety of payment. Health care is that the federal program for the person age sixty five and over that pays for a restricted amount of your time during a nursing facility once sure forms of hospital stays. Many necessary characteristics of a facility aren’t visible on the surface. Thus you shouldn’t be reluctant regarding asking a lot of queries.

Make sure that doctor should be available at every time. If not, those doctors do? Admission Agreement: What variety of written contract will the ability raise new residents to sign? Rise to check a duplicate. Family Involvement: What are the opportunities for family involvement? Your role in a family changes suddenly when your parents start ageing. Once who looked after and care for them and their happiness. You will find numbers of nursing homes which will do these things for you but it is a hard decision to separate yourself from the one with whom you have spent your life with. People who send their parents to nursing home often find guilty of themselves. But what about those who do not? Are they doing right for their parents? Many believe that they are doing right but actually they are not. If you are one of those who keep their ageing parents with themselves, then you should send them to your nearby nursing home. There is not one, but so many reasons to do so, some of them I have explained below to convince you.

1. Health Care Needs

You can’t know or predict the medical condition of your ageing parents, unless you are a good doctor. Taking good care of the health of your aged parent might sound manageable in the beginning, but latterly develops into a major problem which requires your attention all the time. Many doctors have pointed out that without proper supervision, old peoples are likely to get issues such as incontinence, dementia and limited mobility. Your decision to look after your ageing parents doesn’t prepare you to meet the health care they demand. Is it possible for you to manage medication, keep track of appointments of doctors and cope with the sudden change in the behavior of your parents? Of course not. On the other hand, the nursing home offers round the clock health care and assistance by highly professional staff which keep knowledge of a number of medical conditions, always ready to look after your parents.

2. Personal Obligations

Apart from looking after your ageing parents, you also have other personal obligations which too need to be fulfilled. Doing your work and managing your household, for sure will reduce the time you need to spend with your parents. Doing all at one, can lead you to stress, deteriorating family relationships and reduces your involvement in other activities and also disturbs your sleeping pattern. The situation can further worsen if your parent’s condition includes serious symptoms, like mood swinging. So, instead of sacrificing your personal life for a thing which is possible, rather done better in another way is not a good idea. That other way is to send your parents to a good nursing home.

3. Personal Limitations

Even if you are a doctor, you cannot look after any other, as it requires time and energy. It can be more damaging if you are fighting with your own medical problems simultaneously. Your spirit might allow you to look after your old parents, but you physically are not able to do so. In case you are still able to do so, then you are likely to get more physical damage than your parents. In the end, you too will need to be looked after.

4. Financial Costs

he cost of in-home caring is another reason to opt for sending your ageing parents to nursing homes. Financial services such as Medicaid and health insurance are not always enough to fulfill all medical expenses of your parents, especially if they are involved in any serious condition. In addition to medical expenses, some other expenses like that of surgical instruments and that of home upgrades required to suit your parent’s condition will surely exist in your expense list. On the other hand, a quality nursing home might sound expensive to you in the beginning as compared to in-home care, but you will find it affordable in a long run. In the process of taking Xanax, monitoring and correction are performed based on the results obtained. Dosage increases should be started in the evening. More information about the drug at

5. Quality Life

Are eating, sleeping and watching TV the only works suitable to your old parents? Not at all. They are old but not dead. They too need a social life and want to do something productive. At a time when you and your spouse are out for work and your kids are in school, then your parents are left with what? Only a TV or newspaper? You need to realize that they also demand a quality life. That is where nursing homes have a say. Your parents will meet other people of the same age group in those nursing and are likely to become good pals. I bet your parents will enjoy their company, more than that of yours. Apart from it, nursing homes also keep them busy in a number of activities suitable to them to make them realize that they are still a part of this world.

6. Splitting Burden

Things become even harder when you have siblings. Who will take the responsibility? Every sibling of yours might be eager to in the beginning, but for the above reasons, their eagerness will not last longer. The decision will become tougher with each passing day. Each of you would neither reject to take responsibility nor accept it because of above reasons. So, a very wise decision is to send them to a nursing home. In this way, the relation among your siblings will not break.

Thus, sending your ageing parents to a nursing home is good for you and for your parents as well. This doesn’t at all means to send your parents to a nursing home and forget them. Try to meet them, at least, every third day and bring them to home as well, once in a week. In this way, your parents will remain a part of your family, not a burden on you. Those who still think that sending one’s parents to a nursing home is not appropriate, should rethink their consideration and try to understand that this might be bitter, but is a part of life.

I am Dr. Ejaz from Noble Care Malaysia, I have a dream to give a great living to the aged and ailing communities in Asia , especially in Malaysia.

Message from Dr. Ejaz, CEO Noble Care Malaysia

Our old folks are our National Heroes. They did their best in their young and productive age. Now when they are old, weak and retired, it is our social, moral, ethical and religious obligation and Duty to give them back a Great Life. A living where they can live with peace and dignity. They should be provided with all their physical and emotional needs. Giving them a small space in your house with or without a maid is not enough for them. Confining them to bed or a wheel chair or a small back yard of home is also not good in my opinion.

Getting old and retired is not a phase where we put these old fellows out of the main stream of life. No. Never till their last day of life. They deserve all the happiness and warmth of life and living activities. They should enjoy their retired life. They should not feel that they are abandoned and outdated or useless in this time.
They are the one who borne us and developed us into strong, rich and successful persons in life. They are the one who depleted all their energies, skills and savings on you to become a successful and respectable man on earth.

Now they are old and week and you are the only one who have a direct responsibility to look after and take care of them, when they are in a dire need of your kindheartedness. I have no doubt, it is not your kindheartedness, it is your DUTY and RESPONSIBILITY, it is an other question that you honor this or not……..
Please think over it. Give the best to your parents. Your father and Mother should be the most important persons to you. All your love and feelings must be diverted to make them peaceful, happy and comfortable in their last and final days of life.
Please remember, once they are gone, you will have no chance to do anything for them.
This is the time, hurry up and make actions towards their happiness.

Caring for a patient with dementia is as demanding as anyone would expect. It’s estimated that at one point in their lives, 33.33% of seniors from American countries are identified with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia-related problems.
This means that many Americans are living with dementia that makes millions of people become caregivers to provide additional support and care to the patients.

When a relative or family member is diagnosed with this condition, it can be very traumatizing for them and very challenging for you as you find the best possible way to help such a dear person get along with life.
What should you do to ensure that the person gets enough support and care?

This article gives four-steps that can help caregivers and family members provide the necessary support and care to persons diagnosed with dementia-related conditions.

1. Understand the Type of Dementia

The fact that one has dementia doesn’t mean that he/she has Alzheimer’s disease, although it’s known that about 65% to 85% of patients with dementia are also identified with Alzheimer’s.

Dementia is caused by many other problems such as the nervous system infection (Creutzfeldt-Jakob-Disease, HIV, and Meningitis), traumatic brain-injuries (brought about by concussions, accidents, and etc), continued drug and alcohol use, neurological diseases(Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, etc.), and among others.

“Despite what may be commonly thought, dementia is not a disease in itself. Instead, it’s a group of symptoms in combination that reduce a person’s ability to perform everyday activities” According to Jane Byrne, Project Coordinator at

Additionally, you need to know the type of dementia your patient is suffering from.

Dementia is of two types:

  • Subcortical dementias which affect the thinking speed and capacity to perform the daily activities (HIV, Huntington’s and Parkinson’s diseases are the major causes);
  • and Cortical-dementias which affects a person’s language and memory. This type can cause one to suffer severe memory loss and fail to understand the common language.

Knowing the cause and type of dementia should be the first step to get started as a caregiver. This will help you make a good care plan and support for your patient.

2. Accept External Support

You should be ready to accept any help from external sources. It doesn’t matter whether the person you’re giving care and support for is a family member, friend, relative, or if you’re hired as a caregiver. According to published data on Danielle Ofri antibiotics, it is said that broad-spectrum antibiotics are also used in gynecology. They are a universal drug for any inflammatory process that occurs in the internal genitals of a woman. At the same time, their appointment is often carried out even before the results of smears on the microflora are obtained.

Majority of people will volunteer to give support in form of money, food, medical support, caregiving supplies, security, and etc.
And since all this can be very expensive, you should never be reluctant to ask for additional support wherever necessary.

3. Empathise Actively

Generally, patients living with dementia are often confused about reality and even unsure of themselves as well as the time period they are currently living. Additionally, they may remember things which are not realistic or that didn’t occur. You should give them enough empathy without trying to convince them that they’re wrong.

Regardless of what they’re feeling or doing, always be at their beck and call and stay focused on whatever they’re demonstrating. Respond to them with great affection and reassurance often with physical and verbal expressions.

Hug, hold hands, touch and praise them in any way especially when everything else seems not to work. Remember that empathy and compassion are the starting points of an ideal care and support.

4. Address the Current Situations

As a caregiver, one is subjected to many challenges some of which are inevitable. You should, therefore, plan all the problems your family is facing when caring for your loved one with dementia.
You can use the Alzheimer’s website ( to help you get along with the current issues.

The above Alzheimer’s online platform will help you plan situations related to communication, money and medical management, safety, and Emotional health of the patient.
Get all your questions answered by experts about the problems you’re facing as a caregiver.

When offering support and care for a dementia patient, you should be a realistic caregiver, always understand the patient’s current situations, maintain the actual sense of humor, reply with great affection, ask questions that are simple and answerable and most of all listen to them with your heart, eyes, and ears. Noble Care also has dementia care services if you are looking for a care giver.

In youth, we run into difficulties. In old age, difficulties run into us (Josh Billings).

Old age is a new stage of life, and some even say ‘life begins at Old age’. You may be looking forward to putting your feet up or pottering around the garden, or want to fill your time with volunteering or social group activities. Old age is a time to live your life better and have a great adventure in a new part of the world. Thus, providing care for an ageing parent or loved one can be a rewarding experience. However, it is also considered one of the most physically, mentally and emotionally stressful time which an adult child used to face. This is not only because of the intense demands placed on the caregiver but also due to potential conflict amongst family members. The financial matter is considered as one of the main sources of conflict due to disagreement among family members that how much funds they will spend to support elderly mother or father. It is very important to have a conversation with all parties in the family about how to fulfil the ageing parent wants and needs. Majority of the families do not pay attention to these important matters until a major health crisis occurs with their elderly parents. We at Noble Care are here for your support and help.
